Drs. Palermo-Edwards & Cacchillo utilizes the ORTHOPHOS XG 3D Imaging System from Sirona to provide comprehensive, quality dental treatment planning for our patients. Computer Tomography (CT) is an imaging method that takes computerized technology and converts 2 dimensional images into a 3 dimensional (3D) picture. These pictures can provide images of both soft and hard tissues which can be examined in detail using computer software. Dental cone beam imaging provides the doctor more accurate information and 10 times less radiation to the patient than the machines traditionally used in medicine.
Answering questions such as: what does the bone structure look like? How great is the distance to the nerve canal?…are just a few questions that can be answered far more easily using 3D x-rays. The third dimension provided with 3D imaging increases clinical safety for our patients needing various types of treatments.
Some examples of how 3D imaging used at Drs. Palermo-Edwards & Cacchillo’s office can be helpful for dental implant treatment planning includes determining the exact bone topography, amount of bone present below the maxillary sinus, or the need for augmentation for bone height or bone width. 3D imaging can be utilized to help decipher contradictory findings that can sometimes be found between clinical examination and traditional 2D images, determine tooth position for teeth that are trapped in the bone, evaluate the location and size of oral pathology as well as evaluate endodontic lesions (infection of the nerve).
Drs. Palermo-Edwards and Cacchillo will perform an examination to determine if 3D technology is necessary to complete your treatment plan.
